Room 27

Tēnā koutou,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and mihi to all the parents and caregivers of the many awesome students in Akomanga 27 o Ekaranui 2017.

My mum hails from the centre of the great Ngapuhi nation Kaikohe.  With the spirit and courage of Ngati Tautahi and Ngati Ueoneone flowing through my veins I bring to the learning table a resume marinated with an education timeline and many years of hard toil.

Now my dad hails from a small town centred in the humble nation of Hauraki called Paeroa.  Blessed with the wisdom and purity of Ngati Tara/Tokanui, Ngati Paoa and Ngati Hako flowing through my veins I am able to bring the notion of ngakau māhaki and potential-realised to the learning table.  Ko Dereck Paora ahau.

The blending of my mum’s courage and my dad’s humility have given me the tools to take your child on a learning journey that will realise his/her potential.  However, we know it takes a whole marae/village to grow a child and we all have a part to play.

Clendon Park School and Te Whānau Āwhina provide the whakaruruhau or safe place where it is ok to take risks.  The kaiako provides the methodology and encouragement to take risks and our parents and caregivers tautoko and aroha the learner.  It is this support and love that I will be asking our parents and caregivers to deliver in truck loads.

In Akomanga 27 we have a few key areas of focus.  These are:  Attendance -  please encourage and support your tamaiti to attend school every day;  Mahi kainga or homework - please ask your tamaiti if he/she has homework and offer to work through any tasks that your tamaiti feels is a little bit hard.  Also, please stress the importance of arriving at school on time and ready to learn.  Finally, that your child brings an open and positive attitude towards; learning, his/her peers and most importantly taking risks and setting lofty goals.

Whāia te iti kahurangi, ki te tuohu koe me maunga teitei

A key element in the success of whanaketanga o te tamaiti is a seemless communication between home and our kura.  It is our intention that we make this as easy as practicable.  Therefore, in line with our school policy I will be available to talk with you between 8.30am and 8.55am or 3.00pm to 3.30pm Monday to Friday.  Alternatively you can email me at; or call the landline at 09 267 6671 if you have any questions.   I will make it my mission to respond to any communication in a timely manner.  Akomanga 27 also has a blog which keeps a running record of what we have been doing.  You can find the blog here;

Naku te rourou nau te rourou ka ora ai te tamaiti

No reira, Te Whānau Āwhina’s door is always open. So if you have any questions or concerns please come in and see us or it may be that you want to just catch up for a chin wag, so please feel free to do so.  I look forward to a very enjoyable and productive year with your help.

Nau mai haere mai! Mauri ora!
